The National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration NOAA is planning a study on bait and tackle shops that cater to recreational fishermen. (NOAA) announced the proposed project on Monday, Dec. 23 and is taking public comments until Feb. 21.

NOAA plans to survey shop operators “to characterize and quantify their operational costs and sales revenues in addition to describing their clientele,” the announcement says. The survey is part of NOAA's effort to determine the economic impact of the fishing industry. NOAA hopes the data will provide regional and national estimates of bait and tackle stores' impact on the economy.
NOAA plans to survey 2,500 shop owners or managers. Each survey would take about half an hour. NOAA plans to conduct the survey initially by mail or Internet but may follow up with telephone or in-person interviews.
NOAA also needs routine approval from the Office of Management & Budget for the survey.
