Federal budget cuts could close Malmstrom AFB

Malmstrom Air Force Base in Great Falls,  is cutting 69 civilian positions.  All positions are administrative or support functions.

Colonel Robert Stanley, the Vice Wing Commander, said, “As best we can, we are going to try to support and help those people who end up being displaced by this because they’re members of our community and they’re members of our team, and we think the world of them.  This is no reflection at all of their performance.  This is just simply a financial reality the United States is facing right now.”

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta stated “$600 billion in additional defense cuts would be devastating.”  The cuts according to Panetta would lead to plane and ship reductions, along with major troop reductions, which will hurt the nation’s ability to respond quickly and effectively to an attack on the United States.

The mission of Malmstrom Air Force Base in Great Falls is to maintain, operate and protect land-based missiles.  Budget cuts to defense programs are set to start in 2013; Malmstrom AFB faces an uncertain future.

Malmstrom AFB is a necessary part of the nation’s security effort and a critical component of the Great Falls economy.  It is the home of the 341st Missile Wing, which is an intercontinental ballistic missile unit of the Air Force Global Strike Command and one of three remaining US Air Force wings that maintain and operate the Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile.

Some officials in Washington DC suggest the elimination of a whole wing of 150 land-based missiles at one of the three intercontinental missiles bases, Malmstrom being one of these bases.

This approach would hurt Montana families and the local economy.  It is not just military families who would be uprooted by the closure of Malmstrom.

The long-term civilian base employee just a few years short of retirement will have to forego the retirement pension or uproot their family and relocate to another city to find a job.  It is also the small business owner who can not create a new job because he relies on income and customers from military personnel and their families from the base.
