February is National Children's Dental Health Month.
This week, Columbus Family Health Examiner will focus on this very important aspect of childhood health.
Children in Columbus who need low cost dental care can receive services through Columbus Public Health. Basic dental services provided include exams, x-rays, cleanings, fillings, extractions (pulling teeth), some root canals, and denture repairs. Fees are determined by a sliding-fee, which is determined by family size and income. Medicaid and private insurance are also accepted.
Columbus Public Health also offers a dental sealant program for older children. This school-based program offers free protective dental sealants (plastic coatings) on the back permanent molars of 2nd and 6th grade students in the Columbus Public Schools. A dentist screens the students who have parent permission and teams of dental hygienists and dental assistants place the sealants with portable dental equipment at the schools. Since 1986, over 53,000 Columbus school children have received preventive dental sealants on over 180,000 permanent teeth.
