February is american heart month!

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) 715,000 Americans suffer a heart attack every year and 600,000 of those die as a result (CDC, 2013). It's the leading cause of death in the United States for both men and women. It beats infectious diseases and cancers. This is an unfortunate truth because heart disease is also very preventable.

In honor of American Heart Month it felt appropriate to share an article promoting heart health. the important thing to remember about better heart health is that, like saving for your future, every little bit helps. For most of us, dietary changes are the best thing that we can do to better our heart health. In West Texas in particular there are a lot of fast food restaurants and a lot of opprotunities to take on too many calories and too much fat content. In light of that, a great way to help your heart is to research restaurant menus for the best meal options. For example, if you know you're going to Chili's you can look up the menu online and determine what you plan to get before you get to the restaurant. This can help prevent you from looking at the menu while hungry and choosing a less healthy option. It is also important to mention that there are many restaurants online now that offer tips for people who eat out a lot and they can help individuals pick the best option, even at fast food establishments.

Another great thing that you can do for your heart is to incorporate just a little bit of physical activity. It need not be a hour or more work out if you don't have time for that sort of thing. There are a great many exercise programs that are designed for people without a lot of time on their hands and they are specifically catered to getting the heart rate up which is fantastic for cardiovascular health. Even a quick 30 minute walk a few days a week can help do the trick. Be sure to remember, however, that you should always consult a doctor before implementing anything drastic as far as a work out regimen.

Remember health doesn't have to be a chore. Make it a family event or incorporate heart healthy activities into girls or guys night. Going dancing is perfect! If you're already doing that then keep it up! Let's get West Texas healthy!
