Marcel Duchamp: Nude Descending a Staircase: An Homage
February 15 - March 29, 2013
February 15, 2013 marks the 100th anniversary of the opening of the infamous Armory Show arts fair. In honor of the special day, Francis Naumann Fine Art is celebrating by hosting an exhibition honoring Marcel Duchamp's famous painting, Nude Descending a Staircase, a work that was presented at the 1913 Armory Show and caused quite a stir because of the elusiveness of the woman in the painting, and the scandalous nature of the title. The work drew many responses from critics all over the world and has since lived on to become one of the most famous pieces in art history. To celebrate both the Armory Show and Duchamp's work, the gallery has curated an exhibition of works from over thirty artists who have created pieces in response to Nude Descending a Staircase. Artists include Yoko Ono, Robert Brinker, Pamela Joseph, Mel Ramos, and Tetsuya Yamada. Works vary in medium, from film and photography to ink drawing and painting. These works will be displayed side-by-side with some of Duchamp's own works relating to the piece. The opening reception is February 15, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Todd Kelly: My Own Personal Rebus
January 31 - March 9, 2013
This show just opened at Asya Geisberg Gallery at the end of January and is dedicated entirely to the paintings of Brooklyn-based artist Todd Kelly. A dynamic artist, Kelly's works are bright and colorful, experimenting with line and form. Some pieces are purely geometric while others are abstractedly-naturalistic. The artist comments, "My Own Personal Rebus is a puzzle. There is no definitive solution to this puzzle. My randomly created pieces sit next to each other, grow familiar and become inexplicably linked. It is a mind game; I want to find a connection, I want there to be magic, I want it so desperately and then it begins to actually happen. I am forced to question whether I am chancing upon a great new truth or forcing it into being." Join a conversation with the artist on February 16 at 1:00 p.m.

Julian Schnabel 1978 - 1981
February 5 - March 30, 2013
Only four paintings will be on view at Oko, and those paintings will only be on view one at a time, on a rotating basis. Created by Julian Schnabel, the works are emblematic of the artist's "fearless experimentation of [his] early career and suggests the profound influence he has had and continues to exert upon other artists." Each of the artist's works are abstract, sculptural pieces known as "experimental" and "unconventional," a constant source of attention. The gallery that his works will be hung in is also unique - a small East Village storefront that only just opened a few months ago. It's certainly worth taking a look, if not for the art, then for the gallery space itself!

January 23 – April 13 2013
This exhibition is a dual celebration for the esteemed Chelsea gallery, a celebration of the gallery's 20th anniversary, and a celebration of the inauguration of their new exhibition space. Dieter Roth is noted as "one of the most inventive and influential artists of the second half of the 20th century." His works combine found materials with more traditional media like acrylic paints. Roth consistently pushed the boundaries of the definition of art, pushing viewers to look deeper and causing real connections to be made. The exhibition is also part commentary on family connections, with works created in collaboration with Dieter's son Bjorn included. According to Hauser & Wirth, "the exhibition [also] sets the stage for major exhibitions to be presented at 18th Street in 2013 by three artists – Paul McCarthy, Roni Horn and Matthew Day Jackson – who claim Roth as their touchstone." Both influential artists, the Roths will have their works presented through April.
