During the month of February there are many special events for pets. February is also the HSUS Spay Day month. SPAY Day is actually February 23rd, 2010. This is a day to go and get your pet spayed or neutered as to not contribute to the over population problems every city faces. In Savannah, we know about this all too well with all the feral cats we have. Thanks to the Milton Project, and other organizations that catches these feral cats and has them spayed and neutered and then releases them back where they got them from. They do this to live out their natural life but without contributing to the population. They have found this works very effectively in many states that have this type of problem.
The events in Savannah are for pet lovers and some include doing it with your pets. Check them out:
- Feb. 6th – Coastal Pet Rescue is celebrating their 7th year birthday by having a bash at TailsSpin. They are located at the Habersham Village Shopping Center. It will be from 11am until 3pm. There will be cake and refreshments. They are also holding a pet adoption session while there and will have pets on-site. With this event, even though it’s their birthday if you adopt a new pet you get the presents. TailsSpin will be offering a FREE pet ID tag with engraving, a small bag of dog food and 10% off of your purchase that day. Go join in on the fun and check out the pets available for adoption. Not ready for adoption, ask about their fostering program.
- Feb 11th – Coastal Pet Rescue is still celebrating their birthday but at the Savannah Jaycees. The Savannah Jaycees is hosting the birthday party but also holding a supply drive for the rescue. It will be at the Saya Lounge from 6pm to 8pm. There will be free pizza provided from Screaming Mimi’s and the Saya Lounge will have drink specials. Since this is a party and supply drive, some items that they could use right now are things like Purina & Iams food for cats (kittens) and dogs (puppy), clumping cat litter, cat scratching posts, dog chew toys and puppy training pads. Anything else you would want to bring to donate would be greatly appreciated as well.
- Feb 13th – TailsSpin is hosting a low cost vaccine clinic for military, seniors, and students. They are also providing a pet microchip clinic. It will be from 2pm until 4pm. The microchipping will be $20 per pet and provided by the Humane Society for Greater Savannah. The vaccine clinic will be conducted by DR. Stanley Lester of Landmark Veterinary Services, LLC. The vaccinations will be $12 each with $2 of that going to local rescues. They are also offering 10% off all heartworm prevention.
- Feb. 20th – Coastal Pet Rescue is celebrating once more but at the Pawparazzi in Richmond Hill. It will be from 11am until 3pm. They will have a pet adoption event with pets on-site to adopt. They will be hosting a bake sale for fundraising. This event is a party and if attending you could bring a gift for the rescue it would be appreciated but not a requirement. Items of great need are Purina & Iams food for cats (kittens) and dogs (puppy), clumping cat litter, cat scratching posts, dog chew toys, puppy training pads, Greenies Pill Pockets for dogs and cats and puppy, dog and kitten shampoo. Remember even if you cannot adopt now for a permanent home you could foster.
- Feb. 23rd - Spay Day. You can get with your local veterinarian to schedule a day to spay or neutered your pet. There is also a low cost spay clinic in South Carolina that accommodates the Savannah area and its’ surrounding locations. It is SNAC the Spay and Neuter Alliance Clinic. They offer a variety of services as long as the pet is receiving a spay or neuter.
- Feb 27th – The Humane Society for Greater Savannah is hosting their 4th annual Humane Society Dog Lover’s Walk at the Landings. It will be from 8:30am until 11:00am. Registration is at 8:30am at the Messiah Lutheran Church and the walk starts at 9:00am. There will be agility/obedience training demonstrations, microchipping, nail trimming, pet portraits and refreshments. The walk is free and you can walk with or without a dog. Participants can gather pledges or set up a fundraising webpage and email it to friends to raise funds for the walk. This is to raise awareness and help provide funds for the homeless animals at the Humane Society for Greater Savannah.
