Plan ahead for these exciting events coming up next month at the Children’s Museum of Houston:
Celebrate the year of the Snake, January 31 through February 6.
Symbolic of wisdom, transformation and healing, the Snake is held sacred by many mystics. It looks to bring peace and transformation to the New Year as we look to celebrate its ornate traditions. Slither on over and experience the Year of the Snake with fervent activities during the Museum's Lunar New Year celebration. Lunar New Year falls on Feb. 10, 2013.
ON-GOING ACTIVITIES:
•Dragons on Parade: Dragon parades are traditionally used to celebrate this holiday. Design a colorful dragon costume at the Alexander Art Academy.
•Chinese Door Hanger: Welcome good fortune into your home this year at Junktion.
•Chinese Fan: Come to Junktion to build a Chinese fan. It’s a breeze!
•Dragon Puppet: Bring a dragon to life at Junktion.
•Fill the Snake: Play a traditional Chinese shape puzzle game at the ExxonMobil Math Cart.
•Chopsticks Game: How fast can you move in this Chinese New Year game? Join the challenge at the ExxonMobil Math Cart.
WonderWeek: Black History is American History
Honor our rich heritage in celebration of Black History Month, February 7-13. Our history is rich and diverse and the American story would not be complete without the significant contributions of African-Americans. This week, the Museum will pay tribute to African Americans and how they have shaped and influenced our history and community. Don’t forget to visit the Museum’s Cum Yah Gullah exhibit which revives the arts and practices of the Gullah people in the Sea Islands. February is Black History Month.
SPECIAL EVENTS:
•Spotlight Performance - Jazz Education Inc.: For more than 30 years, drummer Bubbha Thomas and the Jazz & Poetry Series have been a big hit with more than one million elementary school children across Texas. Explore the styles of popular music from the 1930′s to the millennium with an emphasis on prominent figures in the history of Jazz music. Come get inspired by the music and revive the “I CAN” mentality.
Event Time: Saturday, Feb. 9 at 3 p.m. in the Brown Auditorium.
ON-GOING ACTIVITIES:
•Christopher Myers Illustrations: Recreate the beautiful illustrations of this African American illustrator from the book, Looking Like Me, at the Alexander Art Academy.
•Make Your Own Jazz Song: Jazz is one of the biggest global musical contributions by African Americans. Stop by Junktion and groove like the greatest by creating your own jazz song.
•Matching Game: Learn about African American heroes matching them to a description of what made them famous at Junktion.
•Anansi the Spider: Anansi/Ananse trickster tales derive from Ghana, were brought by African slaves to the U.S., then developed into Brer Rabbit stories in 19th century American South. Read about Anansi, the tricky spider and make your own spider puppet at Junktion.
•Mancala: Play a traditional African seed sowing game and discover the many math and logic games that came from Africa at the ExxonMobil Math Cart.
National Engineers Week
Engineering offers the world imaginative and innovative solutions to any task at hand, and the Children’s Museum of Houston’s National Engineers Week celebrates those independent minds and ideas. Join us as we prepare the next generation of thinkers through creative activities that will put any aspiring engineer to the test. The official National Engineers Week is Feb. 17 – 23, 2013. Don’t forget to check out the Invention Convention exhibit!
SPECIAL EVENTS:
• Geodesic Dome: Work alongside engineers to create a huge dome you can crawl into. Explore concepts in design, building, and construction.
Event Time: All day, Saturday, Feb. 16 in the Brown Auditorium.
• Circuits: Explore batteries, bulbs, and wires as real-life engineers explain concepts in electronics and how it’s important to our daily lives.
Event Time: All day, Saturday, Feb. 16 in the Alcove.
• American Society of Civil Engineers: Come rub elbows with real life engineers and participate in hands-on, interactive activities.
Event Time: All day, Saturday, Feb. 16 in Kid’s Hall.
ON-GOING ACTIVITIES:
• Surviving the Fall: Invent a package system that will survive a 14-foot drop with the least force applied inside the package at the Inventors’ Workshop.
• Paper Tower: Discover how high a tower you can build with paper at Junktion.
• Engineering Match: Explore the diverse fields of engineering and decide which one best suits you with this matching card game at Junktion.
• Bamboo Arches: These blocks are curved so they give a different challenge than ordinary blocks. What can you build at Junktion?
• Shape Building: Explore the shapes that make up the foundations of many buildings and other structures at the ExxonMobil Math Cart.

Second Saturday of every month opens at 9 a.m. for members.
General Museum admission: $9 per person and $8 for seniors 65+ and for military personnel. Children under one and Museum Members receive free admission.
