February 8: Boy Scouts of America day

The United States Senate has designated 8 Feb 2012 as Boy Scouts of America Day. US Senator Lamar Alexander, a former Eagle Scout, co-sponsored the bill to establish Boy Scouts of America Day which celebrates the 102nd anniversary of Scouting in America. On February 8, 1910 William Dickson Boyce filed incorporation papers in the District of Columbia and created the Boy Scouts of America. Since that time more than a million American boys have participated in scouting programs that build character while training young men in the responsibilities of citizenship and developing personal fitness, as expressed in these two commitments:

Boy Scout Oath (or Promise)

On my honor I will do my best
To do my duty to God and my country
and to obey the Scout Law;
To help other people at all times;
To keep myself physically strong,
mentally awake, and morally straight

Scout Law

A Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly,
courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty,
brave, clean, and reverent.

Unknown Boy Scout Monument

Located in Central Ohio is the famous Unknown Boy Scout Monument, located at 1901 E Dublin Granville Rd, in front of the headquarters of the Boy Scouts of America Simon Kenton Council offices.

RoadsideAmerica.com offers the following information:

 The Unknown Boy Scout was an anonymous British Scout who mysteriously appeared, guided superrich American William Boyce through foggy London, and refused to accept a shilling in payment. "Scouts do not accept tips for Good Turns." This inspired Boyce to bring Scouting to America.
