February 25 is World Spay Day - What can you do?

February is national spay/neuter awareness month, and the highlight is World Spay Day on Tuesday, February 25. Sponsored internationally by the Humane Society of the United States and the International Humane Society, World Spay Day focuses on education and local events to encourage responsible pet ownership - spay/neuter your pets. The HSUS puts it best:

"World Spay Day shines a spotlight on spay/neuter as a proven means of saving the lives of companion animals, community (feral and stray) cats, and street dogs who might otherwise be put down in a shelter or killed on the street."

Local events are easy to find on the World Spay Day website - by entering your zip code, you can find low-cost clinics near your home. Here in Cobb County, we have several nearby options - there low-cost clinics in Duluth, Adairsville, Ball Ground, Blue Ridge, and Gainesville that can be linked to through the World Spay Day site.

Donations to your local animal rescue group or shelter are always welcome, but in the spirit of World Spay Day, consider a monetary donation to help them spay/neuter animals looking for good homes.

Most dogs and cats up for adoption are already altered, but if you have adopted a puppy or kitten not already 'fixed', you know how expensive this surgery is! Typically $300-$500, spaying and neutering can be cost-prohibitive to some new pet owners. It really is amazing that you can adopt a dog or cat for much less than this cost alone - thanks to the wonderful organizations and veterinarians who provide these services!

If you will be in the neighborhood of Chesire Bridge Road in Atlanta this weekend, consider stopping by Pet Supplies Plus to purchase bandanas, calendars, t-shirts, and jewelry to spay/neuter newly rescued cats and dogs at the Animal Savers Rescue table.
