This Friday's tastings look to be back in the swing of variety. Two wine shops, not usually on the "visit" lists of many deserve a harder look this week. Remember to Subscribe for mid-week opportunities, including special sales.
Barrel (14740 NW Cornell Road, Suite 160), has a very nice tasting, perhaps worth the drive, or maybe a great tasting is close to you, far out west-sider!
The Wine Cellar (525 NW Saltzman Rd) has L’Ecole as its visiting winery, and that's on the west side as well.
Perhaps this is a Friday to begin out west and work you way back in!

FRIDAY SIPS - SEAMLESS & THEMELESS RED WINES
Today, February 21, 3:30 - 6:30
Drop by to taste three red wines that have absolutely nothing in common except for their sheer deliciousness!
2012 PURPLE HANDS PINOT NOIR WILLAMETTE VALLEY
$17.99 BTL./$215.88 CASE
“The man behind Purple Hands is Cody Wright, son of Ken Wright, and his wines are nothing like those of his famous father. By doing his own style, Cody has established himself as one of the top-dogs of the next generation of Oregon Pinot producers. One of the most striking under 20 buck Pinots tasted so far this season, the 2012 Purple Hands is quite a charmer.
“The range of quality vineyards used, the diversity of clonal material, the minimal influence of new wood (20% new) and the quality of the vintage all combine to make this one pretty and supple bottle of wine. It has fine depth of color, penetrating red cherry aromatics, nice movement of flavor and surprising depth for its modest price point. Very lovely now and will continue to drink well for another 3-4 years.”
2011 ALTOS LAS HORMIGAS MALBEC RESERVA
$23.99 BTL./$143.94 – SIX PACK CASE
91 POINTS – THE WINE SPECTATOR
#42 WINE SPECTATOR TOP 100
“After working with Altos Las Hormigas's Reserve Malbec for 15+ years now, it seems that the popularity and accolades bestowed on it are endless. This is hands down one of our favorite Argentine reds and like most great wine, there's a story here. A brainchild of famed Italian wine broker Marc de Grazia in conjunction with four highly respected Italian winemakers excited and quite passionate about the potential and challenge of growing old-vine Malbec in a warm climate...specifically, the world-class region of Mendoza in Argentina. In 1997, the first vintage of this supple, concentrated and richly fruited wine was born. Since then, it's risen to sit among the best of the region. We regularly taste wine from South America and Altos is one of the benchmarks we use to gauge quality and value for all others.
“As black as the night in the Uco Valley, this Malbec feels tremendous in size and ripeness, yet held together and maintaining freshness by vivid brisk red tones that is are just as important as the wine's dark fruit flavors. Decadent and opaque aromas and flavors overflow with notes of juicy blackberries, dark cherries, Indian spice, violet and cocoa-laden tobacco. A velvety-texture with layer upon layer of plummy fruit as well as the perfect amount of tannins, that are both ripe and fine grained which add structure and a long beautifully textured mouthfeel. For maximum pleasure, decant this beauty and give it the respect that it deserves, you won't be sorry. Drink through 2021.”
2006 FATTORIA ZERBINA "MARZIENO" RAVENNA ROSSO
[reg. $49.99] SPECIAL PRICE - $34.99 BTL./$419.88 CASE
“Made by one of the real heroines of Italian wine, Cristina Geminiani has been producing excellent wines from her Romagna-based vineyards located about an hour east of Bologna that many Italian wine insiders have known about for many years. On a hot special price, the 2006 Marzieno Ravenna Rosso is a TKO value and whether you love Italian wine or Cabernet-style blends, is worthy of your attention.
“60% Sangiovese, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, 15% Syrah & 5% Ancellotta this is a hearty mouthful of Emilia-Romagna at its best. Still primary with aromas of attacking plum, boysenberry, licorice. Undertones of sage and thyme let you know that it is Italian. Gentle hints of chocolaty, smoky oak creep through (30% new utilized). Structured, full and attacking, but with excellent poise and polish. A little Bordeaux-like firmness shows in the expansive and impressive finish. This is spectacular juice for about 1/4 the price of many trendoid Super Tuscans from the Bolgheri region! Drink through 2022 and certainly not a crime if you were to uncork this evening.”

Lindsay Green of Vertical Wine will be pouring selections from Washington, Italy, France, Spain and Bulgaria:
Alverdi Pinot Grigio 2012 Emilia Romagna $7.99
“Grown along the central-eastern coast of Italy, the grapes are vinified in stainless steel to preserve the integrity of the fruit and maintain the naturally fresh character of the variety. A fresh, floral bouquet with notes of acacia flowers, this dry white is well balanced with lively fruit flavors. Alverdi Pinot Grigio is an excellent aperitif and pairs well with seafood and fresh vegetables.”
Lone Birch Chardonnay 2011 Yakima Valley $8.99
“A delicate bouquet of citrus fruits. Crisp, dry, and refreshing with vibrant acidity, a round mouthfeel, and flavors of zesty citrus fruit.”
Alverdi Sangiovese 2012 Emilia Romagna $7.99
“Produced from approximately 60 hectares in the northwest region of Emilia-Romagna, Alverdi Sangiovese is vinified in stainless steel to preserve freshness. With aromas of violets and a mild hint of spice, this dry red is balanced with light tannins and offers a slightly bitter finish. Enjoy this Sangiovese with tomato-based pasta dishes or barbecued meats.”
Vini Pinot Noir 2012 $7.99
Thracian Valley, Bulgaria.
“Aromas of red cherry, a bit of a green component and a hint of chocolate. Tasting this medium-bodied wine reveals bright fruit (mostly red and black cherry) along with a bit of black tea that flows into the medium long finish which also features some smoky tobacco notes at the very end. Tasty and easy to drink. “
La Griveliere Cotes du Rhone 2012 $10.99
“Elegant fresh red fruits and lively berry notes command the nose and palate. The wine is light-medium in body with a silky mouthfeel and soft finish.”
Dinastia Vivanco Rioja 2009 $18.99
“The bouquet consists of mature red berries, with hints of smoke, vanilla, and spice. Well-structured in the mouth, this Crianza is expressive and meaty and possesses a good balance of red fruit and toasted flavors. The tannins are mature and lead to an elegant, long finish. While this wine can be enjoyed now, it will also keep for 5-10 years.”
Carpineto Dogajolo Toscano 2010 $13.99
80% Sangiovese 20% Cabernet.
“This is a very innovative product, a young “Super-Tuscan”, whose characteristics are never found together in the same wine. Dogajolo combines the power and deep colors of a young wine, the elegance and balance given by wood aging, as well as a fruity and fragrant bouquet. Color: deep garnet with violet reflections. Bouquet: very fruity and intense, with hints of cherry, coffee, vanilla and spice.
Flavor: full, soft on the palate, complex, well developed. Given its fruitiness, Dogajolo can be paired with first courses and white meats, but shows at its best with full-flavored dishes such as roasts, grilled meats, cold cuts and Tuscan regional specialties.”
And there may be a mystery wine at Dave's desk...

February 21, 2014
“This is going to be a quick hit this morning as I was up late and here early after a VINO event last night at the shop. Brain dead…auto pilot…sleep walking…call it what you will, that’s what I feel like this morning. But luckily for all you soon-to-be-satisfied tasters I made the wine selections earlier in the week for this Friday’s off the hook Rhone Valley tasting. Careful selections were made while all synapses were firing as they should. After the E-Special a couple of week’s ago where we featured two amazing wines from Vacqueyras, and the load of new French red I’ve been tasting from this region that is, and always will be, a personal favorite of mine, I am extremely excited to be showing off the goods this Friday. The wines will, as they always do, be so redolent of the land they’re grown and the people who make them. Add in the usual astonishing bang for the buck you get from the Rhone, it makes these wines something not to miss….”
