From Mario Van Peebles (New Jack City), the son of filmmaker Melvin Van Peebles, comes the powerful, moving drama All Things Fall Apart starring Queens, NY native Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson (Get Rich or Die Tryin’), Ray Liotta (Goodfellas) and Emmy and Golden Globe winner Lynn Whitfield (The Josephine Baker Story). Previously, the film was named Things Fall Apart, the same title as Chinua Achebe’s popular 1958 modern African novel. However, when Achebe’s legal team declined Jackson’s million dollar offer and refused to sell the title, he changed the name to All Things Fall Apart to prevent further legal dispute. The film also received much buzz for Jackson’s incredible physical transformation by losing 50 pounds to play the role of Deon.
All Things Fall Apart tells the story of Deon, a talented college running back who has high hopes for a NFL career. At the height of his game, his life is turned upside-down when he becomes ill. After some medical tests, Deon is informed by Dr. Brintall that he is cancer-stricken and needs to go through chemotherapy.
As Deon’s body deteriorates and his football dreams seem unattainable, he struggles to come to terms with his new life. Empowered by newfound strength, he becomes closer to his family and makes amends with his jealous brother. Despite the grim prognosis, he is determined to grip onto hope and not let cancer win the battle of his life.
The DVD and Blu-ray lack any special features other than a trailer of the film. It would have been nice to have a featurette of Jackson discussing his transformation. Both releases are available at all major New York City retailers including Best Buy, Target and Walmart (in Long Island).
