From Academy Award-winning director Clint Eastwood comes the biographical drama film J. Edgar starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Armie Hammer, Naomi Watts, Damon Herriman, Ed Westwick, Jeffrey Donovan and Oscar winner Judi Dench. The film focuses on the life of the first director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation by examining various periods of his life.
J. Edgar Hoover was one of the most admired and feared men in history. Appointed by President Calvin Coolidge as the sixth director of the Bureau of Investigations, he served eight U.S. Presidents including Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry S. Truman, John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson and Richard Nixon. He was ruthless and yet diligent in protecting the country from real or perceived threats. Through his will power and political maneuverings, he became a force to be reckoned with.
Although Hoover was revered for his fight against gangsters, bank robbers, kidnappers, bootleggers, communism and espionage, his methods were questionable at times. He was not beyond using covert “dirty tricks” that included illegal wire taps, planting false evidence and infiltration. Through the years, he amassed a large amount of compromising information about many influential people, especially leading politicians. However behind closed doors, he had his own secrets that would have destroyed the empire he painstakingly built.
