From award-winning Swedish film and music video director Jonas Åkerlund comes the quirky dark comedy film Small Apartments. Based on Chris Millis’ novella, who also wrote the screenplay, it stars Little Britain’s Matt Lucas in his first leading role. Along with him is an all-star cast that includes Billy Crystal, Juno Temple, James Marsden, Peter Stormare, Amanda Plummer, Dolph Lundgren, Rosie Perez, Rebel Wilson, James Caan and Johnny Knoxville.
Franklin Franklin is a fat, pasty white, hairless, socially inept recluse who lives in a decrepit LA apartment complex walking around in his tighty-whities. He lives in squalor with a small dog, who occasionally speaks, and his neighbors include a stoner, a wanna-be stripper, a gruff busybody and a cranky old artist. Franklin Franklin drinks only soda and is surrounded by empty soda bottles and Swiss memorabilia, including an alphorn he plays -- which annoys his neighbors to no end. He spends his days dreaming of Switzerland, watching from his window a mother and her 15-year-old daughter who live across the street and waiting for a daily package containing fingernail clippings and cassette tapes filled with insane ramblings from his institutionalized brother.
One day, Franklin Franklin accidentally kills his sleazy landlord, who ends up laid out on the linoleum of his kitchen creating an offensive stench. Creating the worst staged suicide ever in an attempt to cover up the murder, the drunk fire investigator Burt Walnut comes around asking questions. Franklin Franklin remains unfazed until his brother’s daily package stops coming. Now unhinged, he will need his crazy brother’s help to set him free.
