From Sundance Award-winning filmmaker Lee Hirsch comes the critically acclaimed documentary film Bully that sparked a national movement to rally against bullying, hate and intolerance. The film follows five students who are bullied by their peers on a daily basis and the families who fight for them. Two of the students, Tyler Long and Ty Smalley, end up taking their own lives, unable to bear the torture they faced from their peers. One 14-year-old female student gets incarcerated for bringing a gun on the school bus to protect herself because she felt no one else would. The students were from high schools in Georgia, Iowa, Texas, Mississippi and Oklahoma during the 2009 - 2010 school year.
Thirteen million kids across the U.S. will suffer from the bullying each year just like these five youths. It is the most common form of violence experienced by young people across the nation. Sadly, three million students will be absent from school each month and miss the vital education they need because they feel unsafe. More danger arises when thirty percent of these children may bring weapons to school because they feel they are the only ones who can protect themselves.
The intimate and often shocking glimpse into homes, classrooms, cafeterias and principals' offices is a wake up call to students, parents and educators of how long this serious situation has gone unchecked in schools and the immediate need to find a solution to stop bullying. Join the leaders from the worlds of Hollywood, fashion, politics, business and sports -- including President Barack Obama, Meryl Streep, Ellen DeGeneres, Johnny Depp, the New Orleans Saints’ Drew Brees, Tommy Hilfiger, Justin Bieber, Kelly Ripa and Anderson Cooper -- to publicly lend your support today to amplify the message of Bully and save the children of our future.
