Christmas Eve comes early on Thursday, Dec. 20, with an Italian dining experience, the Feast of the Seven Fishes Wine Dinner, at Capri Seaside Italian Grille in Salisbury, Mass. Capri Executive Chef Stan Hornsby, who grew up celebrating this special culinary tradition, will prepare a mouthwatering 7-course meal featuring fresh fish and seafood dishes paired with wines from Italy. For centuries, families and friends in Italy and their descendants in America have celebrated the Christmas Eve tradition of the Feast of the Seven Fishes, also known as “La Vigilia di Natale.” In this culinary custom, seven different types of fish are prepared and enjoyed in a variety of ways. Although there is no conclusive evidence why the feast traditionally includes seven dishes, many people believe that the number reflects the seven sacraments of the Catholic Church. Chef Hornsby will take a break from the kitchen during the dinner to share tips with diners on preparing their own Christmas Eve meals.
Capri’s abundant menu served family style will begin with an Amuse Course of Shrimp Sorrento: tender shrimp prepared with prosciutto and mushrooms in a sweet vermouth sauce. First Course features Crisp Calamari topped with herb garlic butter, fried tomatoes and cherry pepper aioli; Peppercorn Mussels with onion, garlic, tomatoes, peppers, fresh oregano and a white wine tomato borth; and Cape Cod oysters prepared in Rockefeller style with sun-dried tomato, spinach and romano cheese. Salad offerings are traditional Caesar or Spinach with raspberry vinaigrette, goat cheese and walnuts. Next, three entrees will include Haddock Caponata with roasted tomatoes, onions, olives and capers; Lobster Stuffed Shells with tomato basil ragout; and Stuffed Sole with fresh herb and scallop stuffing, with newburg sauce. The meal will conclude with Italian pastries and cookies.
