Every Christmas Eve, many Italians celebrate the Feast of the Seven Fishes. This meal derives from the Roman Catholic church and the belief that one should refrain from meat before Christmas day. While a traditional meal would include baccala and fresh smelt, this Examiner takes a less traditional approach by making small tasting courses of whatever seafood looks best that day. One doesn’t need to be Roman Catholic or Italian to celebrate this meal - it’s just a fun and exciting new way to eat during the holiday.
Below you will find a list of recipes that would be perfect for any Feast of the Seven Fishes. One can start small and do a cioppino (seafood stew) or go all out and have small tasting courses. Also, don’t feel like the menu needs to be all Italian food - mix it up! This year, this Examiner is taking a trip around the world via seafood, from America to Puerto Rico to Asia!
In this Examiner’s opinion, the Norfolk or Virginia Beach Harris Teeter has the best selection of fresh seafood in the area.
