The Doors Examiner has been pretty good on reporting on European happenings of Doors related events we’ve reported on the Manzarek-Krieger Band’s yearly European tours (prior to last year’s death of Ray Manzarek), we’ve also reported on John Densmore’s recent Disquaire Day book signings that coincided with the French edition of his book “The Doors Unhinged” as well as his trip to Perugia, Italy for the Alive Music Festival. Europe has been an important part of The Doors history right from their halcyon days of the 60’s, the BBC documentary “The Doors Are Open,” and their performances in Amsterdam, where Jim Morrison ingested so many drugs he passed out and Ray Manzarek sang The Doors songs, Frankfort, Germany, and Sweden. But there is one part of this equation that I’ve inadvertently missed and that’s the ‘Feast of Friends Music Festival’ in Germany which this year is celebrating it’s 10th anniversary.
The ‘Feast of Friends Music Festival’ was born as an idea in 2004 when Doors fans Uwe Huhn, Jurgen Bamberg, and Kai Wittowski attended “The Magic 3 J’s,” a tribute to Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, and Jim Morrison. The event included videos of the bands and performers but the three Doors fans thought they could create a festival for The Doors and do it better! They created an online forum and they soon received a call from Benny Luther, the lead singer of the German Doors tribute band ‘The Lizard Kings’ and they held the first ‘Feast of Friends Music Festival’ on July 30, 2005.
The festival features Doors tribute bands from many different countries, readings and exhibitions. The festival’s continued success has made it an annual event and they’re celebrating their 10th anniversary in Heyrothsberge Bei Madgeburg, Germany July 25-26, 2014. Doors tribute bands appearing for this years festival include “Lost Paris Tapes’ from Serbia, ‘The Roars’ from Finland, “The Indian Sunset’ from Italy, ‘The Doors in Concert’ from the Netherlands. Other bands playing include Germany’s #1 psychedelic band ‘Vibravoid’ and ‘The Roaring 420’s’ also from Germany, as well as the Dunja Apfelbaum Band, as well as a psychedelic light show by Lizart! For more information and/or to buy tickets visit the Feast of Friends Music Festival site on Facebook or the festivals official website.
Many thanks to Andreas Lizart for the information on the Feast of Friends Festival, and to Roland Schloesser for suggesting the article.
