Fear of writing

Scenario

You have a friend who is or has been impressed deeply by your writing. He or she urges you to "teach them" how to write well. You try to get them started by telling them they need a pencil and paper, or better, a laptop. Everything is going well, but sooner or later the excuses start to pile up.

"This is too hard."

"Nobody will like this!"

And a personal favorite: "I suck at writing."

Nobody sucks at writing. Just as we are all different people with various feelings, personalities and thoughts, we all have the ability to write something unique. You may be good at reflecting your own emotions, write in a diary. If you're the insightful type, and soak in everything around you like a sponge, perhaps a memoir would be a good start. If you're like me, you may just want to have your opinion in everything!

Writing is an art, there's no doubt about that. Just as a musician studies his or her lyrics and checks the rhythm of a song, a writer must do the same with words and tone. As the artist stares at the sculpture, perfecting every curve and detail within it, a writer also spends time editing and proofreading his or her masterpiece. Before you put off your writing as useless, think about what you feel, not what you want others to feel.

A writer truly conquers his or her fear of writing when they can publically show off their writing, despite what it's content is. Unless you're the very private type, go out there in the world and be proud of your penmanship on paper!

Hold your writing up like a proud flag, because it is what makes you unique. You'll never know your potential as a writer until you get people's opinions on them. The Internet is a wonderful medium that will not only spread your work like wildfire, but also will give you instantaneous feedback on it. Take advantage of it!

"If there's a book you really want to read, but it hasn't been written yet, then you must write it. " -Toni Morrison
