Botox the latest treatment for urinary incontinence
Botox known for its treatment of crow’s feet and facial wrinkles has now been granted FDA approval to be used as a treatment for people with overactive bladders with neurological conditions such as MS.
George Benson, deputy director of FDA’s division of reproductive and urological products, stated that Botox offers people another treatment option. Noting that urinary inconsistence linked with neurological conditions can be hard to manage.
Early this month Botox had received similar approval in Europe.
According to Allergan’s (manufacture of Botox) CEO David Pyott had earlier this month related to Reuters the company will attempt to be granted approval to market Botox to a wider population of patients with overactive bladders.
Caused by irrepressible contractions of the bladder, overactive bladder causes frequent urination, insistent need to urinate and incapability to manage urination.
Among patients with MS or spinal cord injury around sixty to eighty percent experience some type of bladder issues.
One injection of Botox placed into the bladder, relaxes and increases the bladders storage capacity. The one injection is said to last around nine months.
Botox is a purified form of botulinum which obstructs nerve signals had received FDA approval last October for treatments of migraines.
Current medications used to treat bladder control problems include; Ditropan, Enablex and Toviaz.
