FDA closes bakery production: Sugar-free muffins loaded with sugar and fat

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) decreed a permanent shut down of a New Jersey bakery on March 13. The Butterfly Bakery, Inc. was ordered an FDA shutdown due to misbranding their muffins and snack cakes.

President of the bake shop Brenda Isaac, was informed – via an official FDA letter dated May 31, 2011 – that government laboratory tests has revealed several violations that affect the consumer public; the gross violations warranted immediate corrective action.

The Clifton, N.J.-based baked goods shop was finally slapped by a government shutdown of their entire operation due to continued government noncompliance.

The injunction to shut down the bakery shop included misrepresentation of their sugar-free double chocolate chip and no sugar added blueberry muffins which contained over the fat gram servings; the company was also cited after test results discovered the presence of added sugar and not declaring milk as a listed food allergen to their food labels.

The infraction was hardest hit to their touted sugar-free dessert cakes when laboratory findings found in some of their muffins and snack cakes to contain as much as three times the amount of sugar, according to FDA reports.

The Butterfly Bakery, Inc. sold and distributed their misbranded baked goods to area retailers including supermarkets all over the U.S.

According to the FDA, ““This injunction demonstrates that the FDA will seek enforcement action against companies that mislead consumers on the products they purchase,” said Melinda K. Plaisier, the FDA’s acting associate commissioner for regulatory affairs. “Until Butterfly Bakery meets FDA regulations, it will no longer be able to process or distribute their products.”
