Overdoses sadly on a daily basis and emergency responders as well as family members haven’t been able to react quickly enough to help treat people who are victims of drug abuse.
Philly.com on April 4 reports that Naloxone has been approved in an auto-injector device to reverse the affects of a drug overdose. Naloxone or Narcan as well as Evzio which has been approved by the FDA as an opioid overdose antidote that will now be available for caregivers, family members, the police and emergency medical personnel.
According to Forbes there were 16,651 overdose deaths in the year 2010. This statistic is extreme. So many people died without having this new potentially lifesaving drug device available to prevent many of those deaths. The deaths were the results of accidental or intentional overdoses of opioid drugs such as heroin, hydrocodone, morphine, oxycodone and fentanyl.
Since the FDA has approved this new device and lifesaving treatment those who overdose will have a greater survival change if treated within a one to three hour window. This will definitely save lives and it is a shame that it has taken over four decades to get this treatment approved.
Now police officers, care givers, and laypeople will be able to go through a training session to learn how to administer this device when it is necessary. Hospitals, doctor’s offices, ambulances and police officers will be equipped with Naloxone and be at the ready to save people’s lives with immediate action. Family members and caregivers who have someone in their charge that has been addicted to drugs will also have to be trained and now will be able to distribute the dose when an emergency situation arises on their watch.
If side effects occur call your physician immediately. All side effects can also be reported to the FDA by calling their toll free number: 1-800-FDA-1088.
This will decrease the number of deaths due to drug abuse and overdoses across the nation!
