“This was a statement game between the number one and number two team in the league, we needed to make a statement and I feel that we did that today , FC Sounders Lamar Neagle said after the game.
The win in front of 39,245 fans was a league best five home straight for Sounders FC.
With both teams missing players due to National team duty, Sounders FC diamond shape midfield of Marco Pappa, Gonzalo Pineda Osvalso Alonso and Lamar Neagle was able to dominate the game in the center of the field.
The Sounders FC midfielder's found space on the flanks all afternoon and capitalized by making quick sharp intricate passes that kept Real Salt Lake from mounting any type of consistent attack.
Real Salt Lake had six shots on goal for the game while Sounders FC the top scoring team in MLS had thirteen.
The first 40 minutes of the game saw a chippy affair with much trash talking between the players.
The game took an ominous turn just a minute later when Sounders FC Midfielder Lamar Neagle collided with Real Salt Lake's Aaron Maund and where awarded a controversial penalty kick.
Gonzalo Pineda converted the penalty kick and Sounders FC took a 1-nil lead into the break and never looked back .
Sounders FC’s started the second half with nimble and swift passes that earned three consecutive fouls and a free kick that proved to be fatal for the visitors.
Sounders FC where awarded a free kick in the 55th minute that Marco Pappa left footed into the back of the Real Salt Lake goal to give the Sounders a 2-0 lead.
Lamar Neagle collected a loose ball in the 62 minute, streaked down the right flank and fed Chad Barrett for FC Sounder’s third goal of the game.
“ There where missing some guys and so where we , we where not going to let up on them and after we scored that second goal, I knew they did not have a chance of coming back,” Barrett said after the game.
Kenny Cooper played a goal mouth pass that found a running Obafemi Martins on the back side of the Real Salt Lake goal in the 90 minute to give FC Sounders their fourth goal of the game.
“ I am pleased with the way the team played today, and our commitment to the game. We were in first and wanted to create some separation there and I think today’s game did that,” Sounder Coach Sigi Schmid said after the game.
