The NWSL additional player signing window closed Thursday evening and while most teams have not announced the signings yet, some of them have become known. FC Kansas City’s free agents have been sort of known for a while as it is.
Three of the players tweeted congrats to the players taken in the draft or otherwise have been open about the fact that they would be playing in Kansas City this summer. The other was one of the players that came into see the city weeks ago and at that time intended to join the Blues but had to wait until contracts and details were worked out.
With the window closed, sources have quietly confirmed that the speculated list of FC Kansas City free agents was accurate.
Sinead Farrelly – A young (23) and creative player midfielder that should help in possession and building the attack. She was a Hermann Trophy finalist in 2009 at University of Virginia and has played for the U.S. National Team at the U-23, U-20 and U-17 level. . Farrelly was drafted second overall by the Philadelphia Independence in the 2011 WPS draft (Alex Morgan was first).
Jen Buczkowski – Buczkowski (27) is a very tough midfielder. She is aggressive and will be tasked with winning the ball back. Buczkowski played for Notre Dame (2003-2007) and was drafted in the 2009 WPS draft by Sky Blue FC. She moved to the Philadelphia Independence in 2010 and helped them to the WPS finals two years in a row.
Melissa Henderson – Henderson is a goal scorer. She likes to run at goal and is dangerous around the box. She scored 70 goals for Note Dame and was drafted second overall in the 2012 WPS draft (behind Sydney Leroux). She is only 23 and one of the forwards that FC Kansas City needed.
Leigh Ann Robinson – Robinson (26) is an experienced and versatile defender. She can play on both left and right outside back as well as mid or even forward if needed. Expect to see her running up the wing from an outside back spot. Played all three years in WPS and helped the Philadelphia Independence get to the finals in 2011.
As it stands now, FC Kansas City should have 15 players on their pre-season roster. They will be able to have up to 32 on the pre-season roster but only 18-20 on the regular season roster. The next step will be the Supplemental Draft on Feb 7th and the open tryouts Feb 15th-16th.
