FC Dallas has signed former Dallas Burn and Honduran National Team midfielder Ramon Nunez, according to Dan Hunt, vice president of Hunt Sports Group and interim president of FC Dallas.
On a public chat on Facebook earlier today, Hunt answered several questions from fans, including one that asked about the status of the team’s negotiations with Nunez. In response, Hunt revealed that "all parties have signed the contract and we are waiting for final league approval."
Nuñez, 27, started 42 games and scored 14 goals for Dallas between 2004 and 2007, and is expected to back up team captain David Ferreira, who has missed 15 months due to injury since 2011. However, Nunez is still rehabbing the torn ACL he suffered last September with Leeds United, and FC Dallas head coach Schellas Hyndman said he isn’t expecting him to be healthy for at least another month. "He won't be available, probably until the beginning of April," Hyndman said.
Nuñez, who has appeared 44 matches for the Honduran National Team since 2006, graduated from W.T. White high school in Dallas and played under coach Hyndman for a season at SMU before being drafted by the Dallas Burn with the sixth pick in the 2004 MLS draft. Nunez started 42 games and scored 14 goals over three years for his hometown side, but after three years, his relationship with the club grew sour and he asked to be traded. The team apparently agreed and he was traded to Chivas USA in 2007.
Hyndman seems optimistic that time and maturity may have had a positive effect on the young man since those early days of turmoil. “When he played here for the Dallas Burn,” Hyndman said, “I think it was a bit of a rocky time for him. Part of that could have been the direction he was asked to play or it could've been being a young player. I think between that time and [now], I see a lot of maturity, which you would anticipate and expect.”
