FC Dallas scored an early goal and held on for a 1-0 win over the Portland Timbers at Jeld-Wen Field on Wednesday night.
The win gives FC Dallas the lead in the Portland Timbers pre-season tournament ahead of their game against the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday.
FC Dallas started brightly, earning a free-kick in the 14th minute that was taken by David Ferreira who found Matt Hedges at the far post only for his header to be cleared by the Portland defense.
That was a sign of things to come as Dallas hit the lead just two minutes later when another free-kick again allowed Ferreira to send the ball to the far post. The ball eventually fell out for Blas Perez to score with his first touch.
Dallas continued to control the match for the rest of the half, leading in every offensive stat including a 5-1 edge on corners, but they were unable to find a second.
At half time it was an ice-hockey style line change for FC Dallas as they brought on seven new players at half-time in an effort to give all players a run in pre-season.
New signing from Texas rivals, Houston, Je-Vaughn Watson narrowly missed opening his account for his new club as his header from a Michael cross clipped the crossbar before being palmed away by Jake Gleeson.
Portland had a solid chance in the 59th minute as Jose Valencia's run down the right allowed him to send the ball in for Sebastian Rincon who looked a certainty to score only for Zach Loyd to recover in time.
The Timbers had one final chance, coming in the 82nd minute as they were awarded a free-kick on the edge of the area which allowed Michael Nanchoff to step up but he sent his shot just wide of the post giving Dallas a 1-0 victory.
