FBI release 2011 Preliminary Semiannual Uniform Crime Report

The Federal Bureau of Investigation released it Preliminary Semiannual Uniform Crime Report on Crime in the United States today showing that overall, the beginning of 2011 has seen a continuing downward trend in crime.  Figures used in this Report were submitted voluntarily by law enforcement agencies throughout the country.

Chicago figures, when compared to the beginning of 2010, the beginning of 2011 show a downward trend except in Burglary and Motor Vehicle Theft.  The statistics for the first six months of 2011 for the Chicago area as reported to the data base of the FBI's Uniform Crime Report are as follows:

Chicago*

  • Murder – 184 down from 2010 figure of 213
  • Robbery – 6,229 down from 2010 figure of 6,477
  • Aggravated Assault – 5,990 down from 2010 figure of 6,928
  • Property Crime – 55,753 down from 2010 figure of 56,532
  • Burglary – 12,052 up form 2010 figure of 11,888
  • Larceny-Theft – 33,547 down from 2010 figure of 36,017
  • Motor Vehicle Theft – 10,154 up form 2010 figure of 8,627

*Violent Crime and Forcible Rape – The data collection methodology for the offense of forcible rape used by Chicago, Illinois, does not comply with national UCR Program guidelines.  Consequently, its figures for forcible rape and violent crime (of which forcible rape is a part) are not published in this table.

The report warns that this is just a preliminary report and not a complete analyses and as such can often created misleading perceptions that adversely affect geographic entities and their residents.  This report is used by cities, like Chicago, to help them figure budgets, plan and allocate resource, assessment of police operations and to help address crime problems at various levels.

The preliminary full-year crime statistics will be released next summer, and the final Crime in the United States 2011 report will be available in the fall.
