FBI raids Scooter Store headquarters over alleged $100 million Medicare fraud (Video)

The FBI raided The Scooter Store headquarters in New Braunfels, Texas stemming from an investigation into alleged Medicare fraud, Friday’s MySanAntonio.com reported. The company allegedly defrauded Medicare by $100 million.

More than 150 FBI agents conducted the raid Wednesday. The company makes scooters for disabled people. The Scooter Store is alleged to have harassed and pressured doctors to prescribe the scooters to patients who don’t need them.

The company’s 1,200 workers were ordered out of the Scooter Store headquarters while the FBI blanketed the complex. The employees were not allowed back in the business on Thursday.

Medicare is alleged to have spent $723 million for the scooters in 2009. A government investigation has learned that about 80 percent of the claims for the scooters were found to be medically unnecessary. Medicare was also billed four times what the scooters should have cost, investigators said.

The Scooter Store maintains that they did nothing illegal, despite the FBI raid.
