The FBI has announced that they are offering a reward of up to $20,000 for any information the disappearance of and leading to the whereabouts of the missing Mississippi toddler, Myra Lewis, who disappeared on March 1.
As soon as authorities found out the little girl was missing a search was launched, however police believe she could have been missing for hours.
The family believes the little girl was kidnapped, and an Amber Alert was issued. Still, authorities are not certain that the kidnapping story is panning out to be true.
Sheriff Randy Tucker said that he, " is still conducting the investigation with the belief the 2-year-old is alive, the Clarion-Ledger reported." He also stated “I don’t have any reason to suggest otherwise, and I’m an optimistic person. I sincerely believe that in my heart.”
Special Agent in Charge Daniel McMullen with the FBI stated, "the reward money might encourage someone who knows Myra's whereabouts to come forward." McMullen went on to say, “We believe there is someone out there who has information as to where little Myra is. We certainly hope by offering this reward, we’ll receive that information.”
Tucker confirmed that the baby's mother, Ericka Lewis, was recently arrested on a probation violation, however her arrest did not have any connection to the child's disappearance.
The charges were related to a "warrant for a probation violation following a welfare fraud conviction." She is also facing charges of a "felon in possession of a firearm."
When ask whether or not the timing of the arrest was poor Tucker stated that. “There’s never a good time to go to jail for anyone, I don’t think,” he said. “Those warrants are issued by the judge, and it’s my duty to uphold the law.”
McMullen has asked for anyone who may have information, no matter how insignificant they think it may be, that could lead to the child's location to please contact the FBI at (601) 948-5000, or contact Madison County Sheriff's Department at (601) 859-2345.
Myra Lewis was last seen "wearing white or khaki pants, a turquoise sweater adorned with a bear, and pink tennis shoes. Myra is 37 inches tall and weighs 27 pounds."
The FBI is offering the money incentive for her return.
Tucker says his office is "investigating numerous leads in a statement saying that, "It's a lot of footwork; At this point we're starting to develop a lot of leads through the community that we're following up on one by one."
