FBI investigating death threats against GOP representative

Three weeks into his first term, Rep. Markwayne Mullin (R-OK), along with his wife and children, have become the target of death threats in the form of letters, the Tulsa World reported Sunday.

Karl Ahlgren, Mullin's chief of staff, said Saturday that that local and federal authorities are investigating the case and consider the issue to be a "serious matter due to the content and nature of the threatening letters which were received."

Ahlgren also said that measures have been taken to ensure the safety of Mullin's family.

U.S. Capitol Police Officer Shenell Antrobus said that his department was also working with state and federal authorities.

"He said he could not provide any other details, including the state of origin of the threats," Susan Hylton wrote.

"Members of Oklahoma's congressional delegation generally don't comment on threats they have received, and Ahlgren said Mullin's office would not comment further," NewsOK added.

Although he has cast very few votes since being sworn in on Jan. 3, he is one of the few members of Congress who voted against the aid package for states affected by Hurricane Sandy, the Tulsa World said.

As of Saturday, it was unknown if the threats are related to congressional business.

In 2010, a Florida man was sentenced to more than two years for threatening a member of Congress.

"I very often watch the recycled news shows on MSNBC," he said when he was sentenced.

Mullin's 2012 run for Congress was his first political campaign, Twitchy said.
