People were closely following the tragedy and stand-off in Herkimer, N.Y. this week. Sadly, now news is out that an FBI dog was killed in the standoff. CNY Central shared the details on March 14.
The FBI dog killed was named Ape, and he was a 2-year-old Czech German Shepherd. Ape was on just his second mission with the FBI, as he just went into service on Feb. 25 after completing training in October. Ape was killed by Kurt Myers when officers entered the building where Myers was hiding Thursday morning.
Myers opened fire on officers, and that is when the FBI dog was killed. The rampage by Myers the prior day left four people dead and two injured, in addition to Ape's death. The K-9 dog will be returned home to Quantico, Va., where a memorial will be held. Special Agent Ann Todd says that Ace made “the ultimate sacrifice for his team.” She adds that, “His actions were heroic and prevented his teammates from being seriously wounded or killed.”
ABC News notes that during the shoot-out with police, Kurt Myers was shot and killed. So far little, if anything, is known about what Myers went on the rampage that left behind such chaos and sadness. Myers was killed after a 19-hour standoff, and officials are in the early stages of piecing things together. Many are hoping to learn more about the motives of Myers that led to four people dying along with the FBI dog being killed.
