On Tuesday, the FBI said there is no indication Aaron Alexis used an AR-15 rifle in Monday's shooting spree at the Washington Navy Yard, despite earlier reports that said he had used the weapon that has prompted calls for stricter gun control, The Blaze reported.
“At this time we believe that Mr. Alexis entered Building 197 at the Navy Yard with a shotgun. We do not have any information at this time that he had an AR-15 in his possession,” said Valerie Parlave, assistant director in charge of the FBI’s Washington field office.
CNN said Alexis may have rented an AR-15, but returned it before Monday's shooting.
Early reports from a law enforcement official indicated Alexis had the weapon, along with two others. That report prompted anti-gun liberals like Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., to instantly call for more gun control despite the strict regulations already in place in the District of Columbia.
According to CNN, law enforcement authorities said Alexis was found with three weapons -- a shotgun, and two other weapons believed to have been taken from guards at the Navy base.
Nevertheless, the initial report caused the New York Daily News to devote its entire front page to the story with the headline: “Same Gun Different Slay,” in what many see as an obvious attempt to advance a political agenda.
A post at Twitchy called it the paper's “Dewey Defeats Truman” moment.
Inside the publication, Twitchy added, was a rabid anti-gun column by Mike Lupica titled “AR-15 is the rifle for the ‘sport’ of hunting humans.”
Immediately above an editorial note that reflects the new information is a picture of Alexis captioned: "Before Aaron Alexis took an AR-15 rifle into the Washington Navy Yard on Monday and shot 12 dead before turning the gun on himself."
"The FBI’s assistant director in charge of the Washington Field Office said Tuesday that gunman Aaron Alexis acted alone in the Navy Yard shooting that killed 12 people and added 'we do not have any information' that an AR-15 was used. Mike Lupica’s column was written Monday when The Daily News and The Associated Press among many others reported, using reputable law enforcement sources, that the shooter Alexis had used three weapons including an AR-15," the Daily News said, without changing the picture's caption.
"Mike Lupica is a great fiction writer. The problem is he tries to pass it off as journalism," one person tweeted.
The New York Daily News was not the only outlet with egg on its face regarding the AR-15.
MSNBC went so far as to use an animation of the shooting, depicting the non-existent AR-15.
CNN's Piers Morgan also issued a number of tweets castigating gun rights when he believed an AR-15 was used, but oddly quit mentioning the rifle after it was learned the shooter didn't have the rifle.
"Ladies and gentlemen: That’s 'real' journalism," Twitchy added.
