Fayetteville State upsets Winston-Salem State in CIAA Tournament

The quarterfinal game between Fayetteville State University and Winston-Salem State University was a close one from start to finish. A dramatic finish allowed the Broncos to upset the Rams in the 2011 CIAA Tournament 66-63.

From the tipoff, neither Fayetteville State nor Winston-Salem State was able to take control of the ballgame. The Rams held a slim lead at halftime 26-23.

With the score tied at 63, Fayetteville State’s Sidney Evans made a 3 pointer with just seconds left on the clock to put the Broncos back in the lead. Evans would lead all scorers with 22 points.

For Winston-Salem State, Shelton Carter scored 17 points. McIntoche Alcius added another 15 points and 14 rebounds.

Fayetteville State will play Livingstone College in the semifinals Friday at 9pm. Livingstone defeated Virginia Union during the quarterfinals of the 2011 CIAA Tournament at the Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte, NC.
