Favorites in brewing: The moka pot

A fairly uncommon (at least in the United States) alternative to the drip coffee maker is known as the moka pot. Gradually growing in popularity, this traditional coffee device offers both a delicious, rich brew and an easy, inexpensive means to make it.

Sweet Maria’s describes the coffee made by a moka pot as “dense and concentrated”, as something between Turkish coffee and espresso (suddenly this author would very much like to try Turkish coffee). It is a rich, intensely flavorful cup of coffee – it can be portioned out in doses as small as two ounces as espresso – but it also just misses having that slight bitterness characteristic of so many espresso drinks. For people who need a real smack of caffeine in the morning, a pot of coffee from a moka brewer fits the bill perfectly.

This wonderful youtube video from Parisi Video describes the process of making coffee with a moka pot – the idea is very simple, the device is easy to clean and maintain, nor is a good moka pot very expensive, as one can see here.
