Following is a purely subjective list of some of my favorite places to smoke cigars in the District and surrounding area:
Despite the smoke ban, some restaurants can offer an area to smoke, if there is proper access to the open air, such as an outdoor dining area or roof deck. Keep in mind, access to these spaces are seasonal and in all cases up to the discretion of management.
- Brasserie Beck, Outdoor Patio, 1101 K Street NW
- Jack Rose Dining Saloon, Open Air Terrace, 2007 18th Street NW
- Morton's the Steakhouse (Downtown), Patio, 1050 Connecticut Avenue NW
- Shelly's Back Room, 1331 F Street NW
Of those listed above, Shelly's Back Room is one of the few establishments that was grandfathered in when the smoking restrictions went into effect in the District. So rain or shine, you can always grab a cigar at this F Street tavern.
The District is a wonderful city for those that enjoy a good stroll, architecture and green space. These open air spaces are are an excellent option (assuming the Occupy DC camps aren't competing for room):
Of course, nothing beats the comraderie and personal attention of a great tobacco shop. Here are some where you can purchase a great cigar, kick up you heels and watch the world go by:
- Cigar Connection, 1000 N. Randolph Street, Arlington
- Chesapeake Cigar Company, 135 Mitchell's Chance Road, Annapolis
- Georgetown Tobacco, 3144 M Street NW, Washington
- Humidour Cigar Shoppe, 10721 York Road, Cockeysville
- W. Curtis Draper Tobacconist, 699 15th Street NW, Washington
