Favorite lunch cruise with your boat: Horizons Restaurant in Sausalito

The guest dock at Horizons Restaurant in Sausalito

The Horizons restaurant at 558 Bridgeway has been a landmark in Sausalito since the turn of the century. The building housing it was built in 1898 as the clubhouse of the San Francisco Yacht Club. It was abandoned by the Yacht Club in 1927 and became a notorious waterfront bar called The Dock. The building was purchased by a Sausalito family in 1959, restored, and leased to the Kinston Trio Properties who founded two restaurants there: the Trident on the ground floor, and Ondine above it.

The 84-foot boat dock was added two years ago, along with two buoys for larger yachts. Call the restaurant before you arrive to make sure there will be room at the dock, or on a buoy, for you. 415-331-3232.

The interior of the restaurant was created by “outlaw” craftsmen in the late 1960s, when it was The Trident. It reflects the psychedelic culture of the times with its curving woodwork and ceiling murals. You can feel still the presence of the Kinston Trio owners, and their regular visiting pals the Rolling Stones, Janis Joplin, Bill Graham, and the Smothers Brothers.

Horizon’s is open daily for lunch and dinner. The menu offers sandwiches, pasta, salads, seafood, and steaks. There is free corkage every Tuesday, and live music on Friday and Saturday. For information about a lunch cruise to San Francisco, see my report on Pier 1.5.
