Father pleads guilty for attempting to sacrifice his son in a San Diego cemetery

A San Diego man accused of attempting to sacrifice his son in April 2012 has pleaded guilty.

Joseph Aldaberto Ramirez's, 32, initial attempt to sacrifice his 8-year old son was brought on by the request of his deceased grandmother. Ramirez attempted the sacrifice in San Diego's Mount Hope Cemetery on April 28, 2012. He brought candles to his grandmother's grave and after one of the candles broke, he slashed his son's forearms as well as his own. His son survived his injuries.

Ramirez was also with the mother of his children, Paredes, and two daughters, aged three and 18 months. Two witnesses heard Paredes screaming and he was caught by a security guard.

A trial will be conducted to determine whether Ramirez was legally sane at the time of the attempted sacrifice because he originally pleaded not guilty due to insanity. If he is found to be insane, he will be placed in a state hospital in lieu of a prison. Ramirez pleaded not guilty in May 2012 and Paredes testified that Ramirez began acting strange after he had a Christian baptism.
