The Arizona Cardinals traveled to the Louisiana Superdome on Sunday, Sept. 22, 2013, to play the New Orleans Saints. Arizona ended up losing 31-7, but that was not the hardest thing to take. It was announced on Sunday that Cardinals' starting defensive tackle Dan Williams was not with the team due to the sudden death of his father, who was killed in a car accident, according to ESPN.
Not a lot of details are yet known about the crash.
Cardinals' team spokesman Mark Dalton said that Thomas Williams was heading from the family's Memphis home to New Orleans to watch his son play. The accident ended up happening around Jackson, Mississippi.
Dan Williams' mother and sister were also in the vehicle. They sustained injuries that required them to be hospitalized, but they're both expected to recover.
"Our prayers and thoughts go to Dan," Cardinals coach Bruce Arians said.
The Cardinals ended up failing to the Saints in a lopsided game, and they truly could have used the presence of Dan Williams on the defensive line. Still, family comes first and Cardinals' defensive lineman Darnell Dockett said the same thing after the game.
"We miss him, but family is more important than the National Football League on any level, and he needs to take as much time as he can with his family," Dockett said. "We're going to be OK and welcome him back and embrace him, but at this point in time he can take as much time as he can with his family."
