Father forced to surrender his son's dog while son serves our country

UPDATE 10/22/11: An updated article was posted yesterday but it seems like a lot of people have missed it. It appears that we have now found out that this entire story may have been fabricated, so that instead of his owner looking bad for surrendering his dog to a kill shelter, he would be pitied. This is very sad and disturbing that someone would do such a thing. However, Pop, the victim in this horrible tale, is super urgent and needs and  deserves to be saved. Let's not let him down because of his shameful owner's lie. His owner should somehow be held accountable for this. Thank you to everyone shared his story, and for all the time and effort being put in by many to save this boy. Hopefully he will be saved and find a great forever home.

UPDATE 10/21/11: Please read.

Imagine being the father of a son in the military who has been deployed. He's worried for his son's safety and has promised and has every intention of keeping his son's dog safe for him until he returns.

Together they begin waiting for his son to come home safely to them.

But then the unthinkable happens. The father's landlord finds out the dog is staying with him and tells him the dog must go. He gives him an ultimatum, literally telling him to "get rid of the dog or move out."

This heartbroken father is forced to surrender his son's dog to a New York shelter. No man or woman serving our country should ever be forced to surrender his or her canine companion if there is someone willing and able to care for the pet in their absence.

This dog shouldn't be sitting in a shelter in jeopardy of euthanasia when he has a family that will care for him.

How is this man going to tell his son that he couldn't keep his promise to him? He obviously feels like he let his son down. He really was given no choice by his landlord.

His son, who expects to come home to his loyal companion, Pop, after his tour of duty is over. A companion that he loves and expects to find waiting for him with his tail wagging and lavishing him with kisses.

Someone has promised the father that he will do everything he can to make sure that Pop will make it out safely into a good home where he can start over and live a long, happy life.

Soldiers' pets should not have to pay the ultimate price - their lives - while their guardians are fighting for ours. This is so unfair to both the servicemen and women and their pets. This is why a program like PACT for Animals' Military Foster Program is a fantastic idea. Pop is very depressed in the shelter. No surprise there. He's probably wondering where his beloved guardian is, and is confused about where he is. At least after a nice walk and some treats, he managed to wag his tail and give a few kisses. This is so sad.

Pop, ID#A914163, is a 5-year old unaltered male, white and black American Bulldog mix who weighs about 99 pounds. He is located at Brooklyn Animal Care (BACC); Phone: (718) 272-7201 (hit 0 for operator, do not leave a message. May need to hit 0 a few times at the end of each cycle to keep their phone ringing.

If you can help by fostering or adopting Pop from this terrible situation he finds himself in, please don't hesitate to help.

Because he is fearful, he may not be good at this time in a home with children, cats, and small pets.

Someone needs to step up for this dog. He doesn't deserve to be in a shelter. We can't let this father, soldier, or dog down.

Please share because sharing saves lives.
