It’s a horrific and shocking tale that alleges cruelty and abuse at the hands of someone who should be a source of protection. Fairfield, California Police say that Joshua Cooper, 18, bit off a large portion of his one-month old son’s nose, when he became frustrated with the infant’s crying. What’s worse is reports say that the nose injury wasn’t the only abuse the infant suffered. According to a report by ABC, the baby, Ta'Jon Riggins-Cooper, also suffered brain hemorrhage and a fractured skull. Authorities responded to a 911 call placed by Ta’Jon’s mother, Angelika Riggins, at approximately 8 am, on March 13, 2014. When officers arrived on the scene, they found the infant screaming in pain, bleeding from the nose and found part of the infant’s nose had been severed. Joshua Cooper was taken into custody.

Emergency responders rushed the baby to the North Bay Medical Center and later to Oakland Children’s Hospital, where doctors reattached the severed portion of the baby’s nose. They are still watching and waiting to ensure the operation’s success. It was there, upon further examination the brain hemorrhage and skull fracture were discovered. By Friday, March 14, 2014, the bay was listed as stable condition. Angelika Riggins stated she has no idea how her son suffered a brain hemorrhage or skull fracture. Ta’Jon was placed in protective custody. His mother has been by his side at Oakland Children’s Hospital, reports say.

Angelika Riggins also says she doesn’t believe that Joshua Cooper bit her son’s nose because of crying. She stated, “I didn't see no anger that morning. I didn't see no stress that morning. He was up playing with the baby. Waking up and seeing that my baby's right next to me in the hospital, it hurts. Hurts my feelings a lot. Like, my heart is broken."

Riggins also stated she was out of the room at the time of the attack. “Two minutes later I come in to a disgusting scene. I didn't see no anger that morning. I didn’t see no stress that morning. He was up playing with the baby. My heart is broken."

Joshua Cooper was formally charged on March 17, 2014. His bond is set at $750,000.
