Terre Haute’s newest pizza place offers a nostalgic throwback to the fabulous 1950s.

Celebrating the grand opening of their business this week, Remember When Pizzeria owners Jon and Wesley Sorlie were winding down from another successful lunchtime rush Thursday afternoon.

“We've been keeping pretty busy,” Jon said.

It was an era when jukeboxes played tunes in diners and clothing fashion began to get fun for the young adults who enjoyed dancing to the songs. Jon said he grew up listening to those timeless classics.

The Terre Haute native had wanted to open a restaurant for a while. After consulting with Scott College of Business professionals at Indiana State University, the father-son duo devised a business plan and found a great location for their start-up business on SR 46, next to Walmart.

Today, Remember When Pizzeria patrons will hear old-time hits by musicians of the decade, such as Chubby Checker and Bobby Darin, and their respective songs like “The Twist” and “Dream Lover.”

Jon credits his wife, Tina, with choosing most of the decorations in the well-lit restaurant.

From the small vinyl 45 records accentuating the other wall art featuring icons Elvis Presley and Marilyn Monroe on the bright red and orange walls-- to the Long Playing records serving as center pieces on each of the little round tables -- the classic rock 'n' roll theme is played well.

With several years of experience as a meat department manager at Kroger, Jon said he felt it was time to try his hand at something new in the food business. He says customers are already pouring on the compliments. They enjoy the pizzas and assorted menu items which includes various beers and Coca-Cola products as well.

“I think we have a different flavor,” he said, noting that the pizza sauce and bread sticks are crowd favorites. “The sauce is sweet, but not too sweet.”

Remember When Pizzeria is located at 2177 S.SR 46. They are open Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. until 10 p.m. and Sunday noon until 10 p.m. For more information on the menu and prices, call (812) 814-4708 or see
