It has been said that geocaching is a great mix of technology and a love of the outdoors. It should come as no surprise that podcasting and geocaching would be a logical combination as well. This is true for the hosts of the Twin Cities geocaching podcast Sir_Zman (Eric Zierdt) and SuperR. These two hosts are not only the hosts of the podcast but they are also a great Father/Daughter team.
The TCGCP has been in existence since Jan of 2006. The original idea for the show was to focus on the news and happenings of the Twin Cities geocaching community. In recent months Zierdt has broadened the horizons of the show by covering more general caching topics.
Originally, Super R was not a regular part of the show but at 5 years old came on as a “guest” host to do a little “geotalk “with dad. Zierdt remembers with fondness some of those early years when SuperR joined in the discussion.
SZ: Congrats on the new baby
SR: Everyone loves babies
SZ: Yeah especially on toast
SR: Yeah...wait, no, you don't eat babies.
SZ: mmmm Babies, taste like Bald Eagle
SR: Eeewww, listen people Sir_ZMan doesn't eat babies, that’s disgusting.
This sort of back and forth banter between the two is one of the most entertaining parts of the show. SuperR became so popular with the podcast listeners that Zierdt decided to make her a regular part of the show. SirZman and SuperR are most likely the only father/daughter geocaching podcast in the world. Zierdt shares it is neat doing an activity with SuperR that most families don’t get to do.
“ I know that Super R loves broadcasting and even loves to use microphones to do fake radio programs around the house, so she learns some skills at the same time we get to have fun together. It has given us something to do together that we both enjoy”, mentions Zierdt.
Another aspect of that makes the podcast stand apart from the rest is when the duo create geocaching lyrics to popular songs. Super R’s favorite episode is when they turned Lady Gaga’s song “Bad Romance” into a song called “Go Caching”.
The TCGCP is going strong with 63 shows published in the last 5 years with the last few episodes downloaded over 500 times each. The future of the podcast will include more video supplemented with the podcast. They published their first video last week, with SuperR doing some reporting for the MnGCA Pizza Night. They hope to do more reporting from caching events like a possible trip to Geowoodstock.
If local cachers would like to support the podcast, the best thing they can do is call the feedback line or send them an email. They encourage calls about promoting a local event, sharing about a great cache they found, or an FTF hunt.
