After a ten-year-old German shepherd slipped from her yard in Willowick, Ohio, she found herself in a dangerous situation.
In fact, according to Friday's Plain Dealer, nobody knows if the dog, named "Maya," is still alive.
Maya's owner, Randy Carter, the senior dog walked out of her yard after the wind blew open a gate. Rather than wandering down the street, the dog walked directly into the path of danger when she ventured onto the ice of Lake Erie.
Despite efforts to coax her back to shore, she would not return to those trying desperately to help.
Animal control and local police joined the effort to retrieve the wayward dog and attempted to lure her to safety, but she was too skittish to comply.
Animal control officer Ann Mills stated:
There was weak ice in between us and her, even water. We did everything we could. I didn't know what else to do to get her back.
Eventually, Maya disappeared from view on Thursday evening.
In the morning, Carter returned to find his dog and was disheartened to see that much of the ice had broken up and only frigid water remained.
Despite the ominous signs that Maya might have fallen into the water, Carter has hope that perhaps she rode one of the broken pieces of ice back to shore.
Until he knows for sure, he will continue to search, and hope.
