A fatal truck accident occured inTuesday's early morning hours in Bridgeport as a semi appeared to drift off the highway on the East Walker bridge as it entered town. The truck landed on the riverbank. Residents called 911 as a large impact and explosion were reported.
The semi was immediately engulfed in flames as the driver did not have a chance to get out. The driver was identified as Miguel Marquez, 33, of San Bernardino, Ca, according to CA Highay Patrol spokeswoman Anne Morin.
The bridge remain closed as emergency crews worked to extinguish the flames well into Tuesday morning. The wreckage was pulled up from the river in the late afternoon and the bridge was reopened about 4 p.m.
As for the river, a hazardous materials team and cleanup specialists were on scene and while supervised by CA Fish and Game officials, installed booms on the river to minimize the impact of the spilled fuel. Most of the truck's fuel burned. The semi was pulling cargo. Booms are now visible below the street bridge just below the main highway bridge.
