A late night shooting that occurred at approximately 10 p.m. Wednesday has left one former Polk County Sheriff's deputy dead and a former Polk County police officer in custody.
Cedartown police responded to the area of Woodlawn Drive in Cedartown after Polk County 911 received multiple reports of gunshots in the area.
Upon arrival, officers discovered former Polk County Sheriff's Deputy Michael Stephen Robinson, 40, of Cedartown lying in the street with multiple gunshot wounds to the chest. Robinson's vehicle was parked nearby with the driver's side door open.
Robinson's wife escaped the vehicle and fled into the bushes after the shooter began walking around with the gun pointed in her direction. The suspect fled the scene and the wife came out of the bushes to find her husband dead.
Another former Polk County police officer John Paul Jones, 40, of Cedartown was immediately identified as the suspect. Officers attempted to locate him and made contact with him via phone. Jones surrendered to authorities without incident.
John Paul Jones is now in custody facing felony murder charges in connection with the shooting death of Robinson.
Robinson was pronounced dead upon arrival at Polk Medical Center. No details regarding why the two former officers were meeting or a possible motive has been released at this time.
Robinson worked for the Polk County Police Department from 1998 to 1992 and worked as a Sheriff's deputy until 2007. Robinson was arrested in October of 2009 for his involvement in an illegal theft ring and chop shop operation.
Jones was employed with the Polk County Police Department for just over a year when he was terminated following an off-duty fight between himself and another officer.
