Yesterday, March 6, a tragic event unfolded at the Army’s Yakima Training Center that left one Soldier dead.
The unnamed Soldier died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound according to Jack Hawkins, coroner for Yakima County, Yakima Wash.
The Soldier was a member of the 364th Expeditionary Sustainment Command which includes some 4,000 Reservists in seven Western states, including Washington and Oregon.
The details surrounding the shooting are under investigation by authorities from Joint Base Lewis-McChord. Information will be released when the investigation is complete and next-of-kin- have been notified.
There was no information regarding other Soldiers who might have been present at the time of this incident.
The Yakima Training Center is a year-round facility and is used by the Army for maneuver training as well as live-fire training exercises.
This tragedy comes in the same week that results of a study indicate rates of mental disorders are higher in warfighters than in the general population at large.
