A fatal accident occurred on Thursday Dec. 5 when a car traveling south on Birchs Road toward Lincoln struck a loose horse. The driver of the car, 56 year-old Diana Clair Morton of Lincoln, was killed in the collision.
At the time of the incident around 9:50 p.m. it was dark and the car’s driver would not have been able to see the horse until split seconds before the impact.
According to police, Morton and her husband were on their way home at the time of the crash. They were traveling in a 100 kmh zone near the intersection with Leadleys Road.
Mrs Morton suffered severe injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Her husband who was a passenger in the car received only minor injuries. Emergency personnel were able to treat him at the scene.
The loose horse died instantly in the collision. He was described as a brown gelding with a white star on his forehead that stood about 15 to 16 hands. Police had not yet identified the horse’s owner but believed he probably escaped from a nearby paddock.
The investigation into this car versus horse collision is ongoing.
