Opening day of the Vancouver Olympics has been tragic for a young luger.  Twenty-one-year-old Nodar Kumaritashvili from the country of Georgia was killed at the Whistler Sliding Centre in pre-competition training.

The report from Macleans.ca says it's believed Kumaritashvili was going over 140 kilometres per hour, or just under 90 miles per hour.

The luge is a sled ridden feet-first down a steep, icy track.  Unlike a bobsled, which has a hard shell giving the sledders a little bit of a buffer, at least for their lower bodies, there is no protection for the rider on a luge.

Reports from Macleans and CTV.
