Fat Tuesday comes at the end of Mardi Gras. Mardi Gras is actual French for Fat Tuesday, referring to the last night of eating richer, fatty foods before the ritual fasting of the Lenten season, which begins on Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent.
It is interesting to know that most places in the U.S. don't celebrate Mardi Gras. It's mainly something that's in New Orleans, Louisiana. It originated in the USA in Mobile, Alabama long before New Orleans even was founded. Mardi Gras is only legally observed as a state holiday in the counties of Mobile and Baldwin in Alabama. The other 65 counties of the state do not recognize Mardi Gras as a holiday.
Fat Tuesday is also known as Shrove Tuesday. The word "shrive" means "confess."
The date of Shrove Tuesday is determined by the date of Easter which changes annually.
