Your own motorsports career could be closer than you think. One of the top race car driver training programs has opened on the site of the former El Toro Air Force base in Orange County. And an excellent exhibit at the LA Auto Show can get you there. That would be -- SMS, which stands for Saleen Motor Sports, in the Concourse pavilion.
SMS also stands for Steve M. Saleen, the racing legend who is bringing his mechanical engineering genious to the business of customizing American sports cars for the race car circuit.
SMS could also stand for Super Maximum Speed. This motorsports technology increases speed so effectively it is actually patented.
The business success of SMS is a credit to family values. Steve Saleen’s daughter Molly Saleen ( in photo with race car) has been recruiting upscale sports car dealers around the world to achieve high-speed dealer network development. The custom sports car company is now represented by elite dealers across the USA and is expanding overseas to Japan, Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, and Canada.
This program is putting racing within the reach of millions of fans who may have thought that they could never afford a race track tested sports car. The “White Label” line starts at about $35,000, just about average for an upscale sports car ( and much, much less than a Maserati.) And fans who are still saving up for their first sports car purchase can still afford to take SMS race car pilot lessons at the company’s driver education center in El Toro. Racing fans can also join the Saleen Owners Enthusiasts Club and attend race themed events with “ride-a-long” and spectator opportunities. If you are short on cash, but still know how to wash and wax a first class sport car, that could be your ticket to ride.
