In this instant gratification society, we feel that obtaining material things will keep your spouse/significant other by our sides. But, the one thing that will help keep any intimate relationship together is your God. As Lent 2013 begins on Wednesday February 13th, you and your spouse/significant other may want to try something new to keep your relationship growing. Lent is the commemoration of the 40 days and 40 nights Jesus spent fasting and praying in the desert. The two of you should pray and fast together. Here are positive benefits for a spiritual fasting and praying that will make your relationship grow:
(1) Figure Out What Your Fasting For: A spiritual fasting is when you deny the desires of the world and focus on your God. It is also sacrificing to obtain a goal. So, if your relationship is not doing well or you just want to become closer with one another, you have to figure out what goal you want to obtain. The two of you can have the same goal or you can have different ones. This is also the time to gain a stronger bond with your God. The closer you get with your God, the better your relationship with your spouse/significant other. Figure out what you will sacrifice that you do on a daily basis, like not being on facebook, for the length of Lent, which is 40 days.
(2) Support One Another: Hold each other accountable for the fast. Make sure you put your God first on everything you do! It is going to be a hard task to obtain your goal. So, you and your spouse/significant other need to be disciplined and foused. If you see your spouse/significant other not convicted or becoming weak, immediately help them by saying positive words, reading more scriptures, and praying.
(3) Pray Together: A couple who prays together stays together! Praying is your intimate talk with your God. Having an intimate relationship with your God will always help you to obtain any goal you set out for yourself and your spouse/significant other. You can pray any time and anywhere. There is no set time for you to pray and/or when you should stop praying.
(4) You Can Fast & Pray Anytime: If you decide not to fast during the Lent period, you can fast any time for any goal you want and/or choose to obtain. Anyone can fast and pray, no matter what religion or belief.
This is a New Year and a new chance to keep your relationship growing. I hope these benefits help you. Have a great day!
